This brings the known issues for iOS4 to:
- Voicemail for XT users
- Integrated car stereo links no longer working
- Reception issues (many say this will be able to fixed with a software patch)
The good news is that a fix is coming as explained on the iPhonewzealand site (basically Telecom needs to update its sim cards).
In the meantime XT users can simply set up a contact called Voicemail with the number 083210 and then set this up as a favourite for easy access. Sure not quite as easy as pressing the Voicemail button, but almost.
Btw I also found this EXCELLENT resource on iOS4, which I highly recommend reading. The best summary on the web I have found.
Black and White Version: XT voicemail busted for now under iOS4, but easy fix for now and a permanent one coming.

While the OS itself is a nice wee upgrade (despite its issues), it does create some problems when it talks to other devices like my car stereo. The web is awash with reports of iOS4 issues, and it appears for car stereos, the issues vary between not being able to play at all, through to being stuck on one song.
In my case, I can select songs from the stereo head unit, play-lists and artists all fine (so it sees the iPhone OK), but it constantly paused, no matter what I do.
Frustrating! Oh, and this isn’t the 1st time Apple did something like this. The 1st time was when they changed the pins they used to charge iPods/iPhones (technical info on pins etc here) so that old chargers didn’t work (including car stereo ones). Lucky someone invented an adaptor!
Not sure if any future updates to iOS4 will fix this, or if any adapter will either. Might have to revert to using Aux in via 3.5mm plug for now.
Black and White Version: We warned, iOS4 may break iPhone/iPod inks to your car stereo.
Since the name (and philosophy) of this blog is white and black, let’s cut to the chase: It’s good. I like it. Much better. Well done. B+ even, but not yet quite right, and a bit un-Apple-like.
For the record, I am using iOS4 on an iPhone 3Gs (I have an iPad, but iOS4 isn’t available on that till “the fall 2010″ according to Apple). For us in NZ that means Spring (so September/October?). To upgrade you need iTunes 9.2 (the new version) and an iPhone 3G or 3Gs. Later generation iPod touches can support iOS4 too, but I don’t write about those, so Google it if you wanna know more on the iPod stuff. Also the 3G only supports certain features of iOS4 (list found here).
Quick tips: It’s very easy to upgrade and your apps and data appear to stay put (mine did anyway). But remember to back up everything before you start this to be safe (ie plug it into a computer and fire up iTunes, back up and also transfer all apps etc).
