UPDATE: This post has been superseded by a new (easier) method for free iPhone emoji found here.

There is a lot of talk on the net (forums etc) about the iPhone smilley package (added as a “language” in terms of settings) and how for only 99c you can unlock it/activate it, whatever.

Btw, the geek term for the smileys is Emoji (絵文字), the Japanese term for the picture characters or emoticons, as explained here on Wikipedia.

Well you can do it for FREE, without jail breaking, SSHing in and editing any files, or downloading any paid apps.

The steps are:

1) Install the app called “isearch!”.  This is a free app from the app store.

NB: There are actually two apps called “isearch”.  Use the one that is FREE and has an exclamation mark (‘!’) in the name.

This is actually a VERY cool app, as its an iPhone friendly, google engine driven, search program.

2) Search for ‘emoji!now’ (without the quotes)

Hit “search”.

3) You should get a message saying “Easter egg unlocked ….”

4) Go to the iPhone’s settings program (ie hit the home button, load up settings)

> General

> International (scroll down for this)

> Keyboards

> Japenese

> Turn “Emoji” on.

Now when you use the keyboard (in any app) you will see a small symbol between the “123″ and “space” buttons.  Tap it to chose an emoji.

Note: This only works iPhone to iPhone.  So go on, install it, send a text to a mate with an iPhone and wait for the reply “Where the hell did you get those from?”

UPDATE: Here is a pic of a text chat window with a bunch of new emjois in it:
